Ingredients
- 10 - onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 8 cups vegetable broth
- 2 tablespoons brandy or cognac
- 1 teaspoon each of salt and pepper
- 12 - baguette slices
- 2 cups shredded swiss cheese
How To Make classic french onion soup

Step 1In a medium to large slow cooker, combine onions and butter. Toss well and cover. Cook on high for 1 hour.

Step 2Add sugar. Stir. Fold a clean tea towel in half over top of crock pot to absorb moisture. Cook on high for 4 hours, stirring two or three times, replacing towel.

Step 3Remove towel and add broth, brandy and seasoning. Stir well. Cook on high for 2 more hours.

Step 4Preheat broiler. Ladle soup into 6 ovenproof bowls. Place 2 bread slices in each bowl and sprinkle with cheese. Broil 2 to 3 minutes. Serve hot.
