Ingredients

  • 1.5 pounds smoked ham bones
  • 3 - medium onions, peeled and quartered
  • 3 - medium carrots, peeled and quartered
  • 3 - medium potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 4 - celery ribs, quartered
  • 1 - green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 - bay leaves
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 3 quarts water
  • 2 cups milk
  • 4 cups corn kernels, fresh
  • 8 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled

How To Make heartland corn chowder

  • Step 1
    Place ham bones, onions, carrots, potatoes, celery, green pepper, bay leaves, thyme, salt and pepper in the water and bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
  • Step 2
    Cook at a slow boil for 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
  • Step 3
    Strain the broth and discard the bay leaves and bones, reserving the ham and vegetables.
  • Step 4
    Skim off and discard fat from the broth.
  • Step 5
    Puree the cooked vegetables and ham in a food processor until smooth.
  • Step 6
    Bring the broth to a boil again and add the pureed vegetables, milk and corn.
  • Step 7
    Let simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Step 8
    Serve, sprinkled with bacon.
