This is the chili my mom made when we were growing up. I've not changed it much, except occasionally adding beans for my husband.

prep time 20 Min
cook time 2 Hr 30 Min
method ---
yield 8 - 10

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions
  • 2 tablespoons chopped garlic - or can use garlic salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon salt (less if using garlic salt)
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon oregano
  • 2 1/2 pounds hamburger
  • 1/3 cup chili powder
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 4 - 8 cups water
  • 1 can tomatoes (large can, petite diced)

How To Make texas family chili

  • Step 1
Brown hamburger and onions until the hamburger is cooked. Drain grease. Sprinkle flour, garlic, salt, cumin, oregano, and chili powder over cooked meat and onions. Stir well. Add canned tomatoes and water. Stir well. Taste and adjust the seasonings or water to your liking. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Cook for 2 - 3 hours on low. Add salt to taste.
  • Step 2
You may use a can of Rotel and a small can of tomatoes for a little heat in place of the large can of tomatoes.
  • Step 3
You may add two cans of pinto beans - don't drain, juice will help thicken chili.
