Years ago when my son was in boy scouts I won the chili cook off with this recipe. The boys served as judges so I guess my secret ingredient of brown sugar gave them the sweet heat that they liked.

prep time 10 Min
cook time 1 Hr
method Stove Top
yield 12 serving(s)

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 large onion diced
  • - salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cans 14.5 oz. chili beans
  • 1 large can 28 oz. crushed tomtoes
  • 1 large can 15 oz tomato sauce
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons each cumin and red pepper flakes
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • - shredded cheddar cheese for serving (optional)

How To Make my award winning molasses chili

  • Step 1
Brown the ground beef with the onions and season with salt and pepper. Drain. Add remaining ingredients and bring to a boil.
  • Step 2
Reduce heat and simmer 1 hour adding some water if it gets too thick.
  • Step 3
