I have been looking for a great chili recipe that I could make from scratch. This one fits the bill. I think the addition of the red and green bell peppers is what makes this chili. Don't skimp on the red bell pepper, even though it can be a little pricier than green bell peppers. I think this chili gets better the longer you have it. However, it probably won't last long at your house, it is so good! Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1 - large onion, chopped
  • 1 - red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 - green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 1 can 16 oz. navy beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 can 28 oz. whole tomatoes, cut up, undrained
  • 1 can 8 oz. tomato sauce
  • 3 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 can 7 oz. mild green chilies, undrained
  • 2 tablespoons tabasco sauce
  • - salt and black pepper, to taste

How To Make chili

  • Step 1
Cook ground beef (I used lean ground round) or turkey with onions, green and red bell peppers and garlic until meat is no longer pink. Drain.
  • Step 2
Add remaining ingredients and let simmer about an hour, stirring occasionally. May need to add water and salt/pepper as chili cooks, depending on how thick you like your chili.
  • Step 3
Can be served with shredded cheese of your choice on top and crackers or cornbread.
