I got some of my grandmother's cookbooks when she passed, and this recipe was in one. I've been making this chili for about 10 years. When tailgating, everyone loved it, they said it was seasoned just right.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 - onion, chopped
  • 2 1/2 lbs - ground beef or turkey
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons chili powder
  • 3 cans pinto beans
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 2 cans tomatoe sauce
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 3 - bay leaves
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 cups beer or water
  • 2 tablespoons cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon rubbed thyme
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon basil leaves

How To Make chili

  • Step 1
    Heat vegetable oil, add chopped onion and cook until transparent. Stir in meat and brown, drain. Add other ingredients and simmer for 1 hour. Top with cheese, sour cream and scallions. Freezes well.
