How To Make slow cooker french onion soup
-
Step 1Microwave beef bones for 8-10 minutes on a plate lined with papertowel, until browned.
-
Step 2Slice onions into thin slices and add to the crock of your slow cooker. Add butter, salt, pepper, brown sugar and thyme to the slow cooker and stir to combine.
-
Step 3In a small bowl whisk together flour, apple butter, red wine vinegar, 1/2 cup beef broth and soy sauce until well combined and smooth.
-
Step 4Pour apple butter mixture over onion mixture in the slow cooker and toss together until well combined.
-
Step 5Nestle beef bones into onions, set the slow cookerto high and walk away for 8 hours.
-
Step 6After 8 hours of cooking, begin checking onions for doneness. Cooking may take up to 12 hours since slow cookers vary, but onions can burn quickly, so check onions every half hour until desired doneness is achieved.
-
Step 7Once onions are done, combine chicken broth and remaining beef broth in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
-
Step 8Pour boiled broths over onions. Taste and season with additional salt and pepperif needed (if not serving immediately, reduce slow cooker to warm and reserve until ready to serve).
-
Step 9About 5-10 minutes before, toast bagutte slices.
-
Step 10Place your oven rack about 6 inches from the top and preheat broiler of your oven.
-
Step 11Divide soup evenly into oven safe serving vessels (crocks, mugs, etc). Top each with toast slices, divide shredded swiss cheese among vessels and top each with a slice ortwo of sliced swiss (enough to slightly overlap the edges of the vessel).
-
Step 12Place the soup underthe broilerfor 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned. Cool for a couple minutes before serving.
