southern pinto beans
My dear sweet Grandmother always brought these pinto beans to the table at meal time. Serve with Farmer's cornbreand and onions for a true southern tradition.

Ingredients
- 2 cups dry pinto beans
- 4 quarts hot water
- 2 tablespoons white sugar
- 4-5 slices hog jowl or 1 medium size ham hock
- - salt and pepper, to taste
How To Make southern pinto beans
-
Step 1Thoroughly wash beans and place in large stock pot. Add water, sugar, ham or jowl, salt and pepper. Over high heat bring to a rolling boil. Reduce heat to simmer. Simmer on low for 4 to 6 hours or until beans are tender.
-
Step 2DO NOT LET THE BEANS COOK DRY. I may be necessary to add water throughout cooking. These beans can also be prepared in a slow cooker. Just add all ingredients with slow cooker on high in the morning and they are ready to eat at supper time.
