My dear sweet Grandmother always brought these pinto beans to the table at meal time. Serve with Farmer's cornbreand and onions for a true southern tradition.

Ingredients

  • 2 c
    dry pinto beans
  • 4 qt
    hot water
  • 2 Tbsp
    white sugar
  • 4-5 slice
    hog jowl or 1 medium size ham hock
  • ·
    salt and pepper, to taste

How to Make Southern Pinto Beans

Step-by-Step

  1. Thoroughly wash beans and place in large stock pot. Add water, sugar, ham or jowl, salt and pepper. Over high heat bring to a rolling boil. Reduce heat to simmer. Simmer on low for 4 to 6 hours or until beans are tender.
  2. DO NOT LET THE BEANS COOK DRY. I may be necessary to add water throughout cooking. These beans can also be prepared in a slow cooker. Just add all ingredients with slow cooker on high in the morning and they are ready to eat at supper time.
