My grandmother in Hawaii was Portuguese, and this soup is traditional, especially at Pentecost. This is the recipe that has been handed down to me, and it's something I absolutely love. Although the recipe calls for ham hocks, a meaty ham bone can be used as well.

2 clove
garlic, minced
1/2 head
cabbage, shredded

tomato sauce
1 lb
chorizo (mexican sausage, mild or medium
water
enough to cover

How to Make Portuguese Red Bean Soup

Step-by-Step

  • 1Place all ingredients in a large pot; heat to boiling. Simmer for 2 to 3 hours. Remove hock bones.
    Serve with garlic bread, if desired.
