Ingredients

  • 1 lb
    dried split peas
  • 3 c
    cold water
  • 2 lb
    smoke ham shank or bones
  • 3 qt
    boiling water
  • 1
    onion, chopped
  • 1
    celery stalk, chopped
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 2
    carrots, minced

How to Make My Canadian Pea Soup

Step-by-Step

  1. Wash and sort peas; soak in cold water overnight.
  2. Drain and place in a large pot; add water, ham bone, onion, celery, carrots and salt.
  3. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer until peas are very tender, about 2 hours, adding more water if needed.
  4. Remove ham; chop and return to soup.
  5. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
