So I walked away.  Yup, just stopped taking picts for a bit ... sometimes that's best!   When I came back about 30 minutes later, I scrapped almost everything I had been working with, grabbed a  cutting board background, and went 'natural.'

1 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. granulated sugar
1/4 tsp. garlic powder
1/4 tsp. dry mustard
1/8 tsp. ground cumin
1/8 tsp. ground ginger
