This was my mom's recipe for brownies. She made them for every family get together. They were gone even before they hit the table! She was a home ec teacher and this was a recipe she used to test following directions. Use a wooden spoon as the directions indicate. I am just saying!!! She always said the kids that used a mixer never had them turn out. These make a great hot fudge brownie sundae!

margarine (mom always used margarine)
square unsweetened baking chocolate
1 c
1/2 c
1 tsp
1 tsp
1 tsp
baking powder
2 large
1/2 c
chopped nuts (optional)

How to Make Saucepan Brownies


  • 1Melt chocolate and margarine in a large saucepan. Remove from heat.
  • 2Beat in sugar until mixed and then all other ingredients using a wooden spoon. Beat til smooth.
  • 3Beat in eggs one at a time using the wooden spoon. Beat til mixture is smooth and well blended. Stir in nuts if using.
  • 4Pour into greased 9x9 pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. The top will be crackly and dry. The center will test done with a toothpick.
