candied orange walnuts (connie's)

My family has been making these walnuts for years. I do not know if they were "invented" by a family member or gotten out of another resource. I do know they're a big hit around the holidays. I put them in cellophane bags to give as gifts. I suppose you could make it with different nuts or extracts, just never have bothered. You can make this on top of the stove or in the microwave. I've included both methods in the recipe below. Everyone loves these little treats. I always double the recipe below. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup corn syrup
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon orange extract or emulsion (i prefer emulsion)
  • 4 cups walnuts , halves(the fresher, the better)

How To Make candied orange walnuts (connie's)

  • Step 1
    Recipe for making in the microwave:
  • Step 2
    Place sugar, corn syrup and butter in a microwave-safe dish and cook on high for approximately 30 seconds.
  • Step 3
    Add walnut pieces.
  • Step 4
    Cook on high, checking every 30 seconds until walnuts are amber in color.
  • Step 5
    Remove from microwave. Stir in extract.
  • Step 6
    Pour onto a cookie sheet and cool completely. Store in an airtight container in a cool place.

    Recipe for on the stove:

    Melt sugar, corn syrup and butter in a large shallow pan over medium heat until incorporated.
  • Step 9
    Add walnuts and cook stirring constantly for about 15 minutes or until amber in color.
  • Step 10
    Remove from stove and stir in extract.
  • Step 11
    Pour onto cookie sheet and cool completely.
  • Step 12
    Store in an airtight container in a cool place.
