Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons white wine
  • 1 - jalapeno pepper, chopped
  • 6 ounces bacon
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons louisiana hot sauce
  • 2 ounces bacon grease
  • 2 quarts water
  • 1 package frozen turnip greens

How To Make turnip greens

  • Step 1
If using fresh greens, fill one side of sink with cold water and 1 teaspoon salt. Rinse leaves and place in other side of the sink. Repeat this process until leaves are clean. Cut stems from leaves and discard them.
  • Step 2
Place 2 quarts water in a large pot. Add salt, jalapeno pepper, and bacon. Boil covered 20 minutes.
  • Step 3
Place washed and cut greens in boiling water, a few leaves at a time. Pour sugar over top of greens. Add hot sauce and wine.
  • Step 4
Cook greens over medium heat until tender (about 1-1/2 hours).
  • Step 5
If desired, wash and dice turnips. Add to boiling water and cook with turnip greens.
  • Step 6
Note: Turnip greens will cook down. If needed, add water, just to cover greens during cooking.
