tomato advise on ripening and storing. I hate wintertime tomatoes that are bricks. Maybe this will help you out.

Step 1

Keep tomatoes in storage with stems pointed down and they will retain their freshness longer

Step 2

To ripen and Soften store bought tomatoes, place in a brown paper sack and keep in a warm area of kitchen, close to oven area or dishwasher. Sunlight doesn't ripen tomatoes, it's the warmth.
Step 3

When picking ripened tomatoes, keep some of the stem on to "keep" them longer. Ever notice when you buy On the vine tomatoes, they seem to keep longer until you pull the stem off.
