Simple Green Beans with Ham
This is a very simple side dish that takes its flavor from the ham used and the lengthy cooking time. If Grandma didn't have ham on hand she would substitute bacon.
- 2 lb
- fresh green beans
- 1/4 lb
- cooked ham, cubed or in strips (or cooked bacon)
- onion, chopped
- 1 tsp
- 3 1/2 c
- black pepper to taste
- you might need salt but check as ham can be very salty
How to Make Simple Green Beans with Ham
- 1Rinse beans, snip off ends and and slice to desired length. Place beans in pot with ham, onion, sugar, pepper, and water. Bring to a boil and then turn down heat to a simmer, cover pot, and cook for 1 hour on low.
- 2Remove cover from pot. Turn heat up to medium and cook for about 20 minutes more or until liquid is reduced to a thick sauce you will serve with beans.
Grandma often served these with a slice of ham and corn bread.
