How to Make Simple and Delicious German Red Cabbage
- In a dutch oven, spray some vegetable spray to coat the bottom of pot. Add the bacon grease and warm on medium.
- Add the onions and apple cooking for about 5 minutes until the onions are very tender.
- Add the remaining ingredients, stirring well. Cover with a lid. Continue cooking and stirring the cabbage occasionally on medium heat for 1hr to 1 1/2 hours until the cabbage is nice and tender. Serve the cabbage while hot. You can also cook on low (simmer) for a few hours. If you cook it this way, remember to turn the heat up to medium and let it get hot enough to serve.
- NOTE: you can cut the sugar content for those watching their sugar intake. Simply keep a 1:1 ratio of sugar and vinegar. For example, do 1/3 cup of sugar and 1/3 cup of vinegar and add some water (approximately 2/3 cup) or 1/2 cup of sugar to 1/2 cup of vinegar and add about 1/4 cup of water.
