For many people, sauerkraut is one of those foods that you either love or you don't! This is how I learned to make sauerkraut to serve with duck and potato dumplings or pork roast.

caraway seeds or more to taste
3 Tbsp
pork, duck or chicken fat, can use crisco
2 c
2 Tbsp

How to Make Sauerkraut


  • 1Place sauerkraut in saucepan. Add water just to cover. Mix sugar and flour together and add to sauerkraut and stir. Add as much caraway seed as desired--I usually use about 1/2 teaspoon. Simmer, covered, for about 20 minutes. Add fat and heat through. Serve.
  • 2Note: When I make this when we have duck, I drain off the duck grease and use that for the fat.
