For many people, sauerkraut is one of those foods that you either love or you don't! This is how I learned to make sauerkraut to serve with duck and potato dumplings or pork roast.

  • 1 qt
  • 2 tsp
  • 1/4 tsp
caraway seeds or more to taste
  • 3 Tbsp
pork, duck or chicken fat, can use crisco

  • 2 Tbsp

How to Make Sauerkraut

  1. Place sauerkraut in saucepan. Add water just to cover. Mix sugar and flour together and add to sauerkraut and stir. Add as much caraway seed as desired--I usually use about 1/2 teaspoon. Simmer, covered, for about 20 minutes. Add fat and heat through. Serve.
  2. Note: When I make this when we have duck, I drain off the duck grease and use that for the fat.
