Ingredients

    large red onions, cut into 1/4 inch slices
  • 1/2 c
    buttermilk
  • 2 c
    vegetable oil
  • 1/2 c
    self rising flour
  • 1/2 c
    cornmeal
  • 1 tsp
    cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    black pepper

How to Make Red Onion Rings

Step-by-Step

  1. Combine onions and buttermilk in a large bowl; soak for 5 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, pour oil into a large pot to a depth of 1-1/2 inches; heat to 375 degrees.
  3. Mix flour, cornmeal, cayenne, salt, and pepper in a medium bowl. Drain onion rings.
  4. Working in small batches, add a few onion rings to flour mixture and turn to coat. Carefully add to oil. Fry until golden brown, 2 minutes. Drain on paper towel. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.
