As a child my mother served this at our holiday table, many years later as a young adult, she taught me to make this and assigned me the responsibility of making this dish for the family and carrying on the tradition.. As an Italian family, we loved this as a side dish with any kind of meal and it's so easy to prepare. However, many of my non Italian friends also like this dish as a dip. Also, If you like hot peppers, just use all green chilies and omit the pimentos.

Ingredients

  • 3 jars ortega brand pimentos
  • 1-2 can ortega brand whole green chilis
  • 8 oz cans tomato sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt w/parsley
  • 1/4 teaspoon basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon sweet basil
  • 2 dashes salt
  • 2 dashes pepper

How To Make italian peppers

  • Step 1
If you can only find Pimentos and Green Chilis that are cut already, that's fine. But if you can find them whole, then cut to bite size pieces.
  • Step 2
Put in a saucepan along with the tomato sauce and seasonings. Let me stress that adding the garlic salt (or powder), salt, pepper, Sweet Basil and Oregano are added to taste. I guessed at a 1/4 tsp because I've never measured what I put in the pot. (I always crush the Basil and Oregano in my palm before adding to the mixture).
  • Step 3
Let simmer at a low boil for about 15 minutes so the flavors blend together. Stir occasionally to keep from any mixture sticking to the pan.
