homemade amish style baked beans
This is a recipe from "Ohiosamishcountry.com", that I am posting for Susie's World Tour, for the Amish part of the tour. With 4 of July and Labor Day weekend coming up, as well as all the weekend BBQ's, this might be a recipe to include in your summer meal plans. Note: Time for making doesn't include the overnight soaking of the beans.

Ingredients
- 1 pound dried great northern beans
- 1 pound thick cut bacon, chopped
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 1/4 cup tomato paste
- 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
- 1/4 cup molasses
- - vegetable broth, as needed
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 teaspoons salt
How To Make homemade amish style baked beans
-
Step 1Soak the beans overnight in a plastic container covered with cold water.
-
Step 2The next day pre-heat oven to 250 degrees. Place a large oven safe pot over medium heat and add in the chopped uncooked bacon and onion, cook about 10 minutes until onions are soft. Stir in tomato paste, brown sugar and molasses. Drain the beans, keeping the liquid stored in a measuring cup. Add beans to pot. Add enough vegetable broth to the bean liquid to total 4 cups and add to pot. Raise heat to high and bring to a boil. Add black pepper and salt. Stir and cover pot with a lid.
-
Step 3Place in oven for 6-8 hours until the beans are soft.
