Homemade Amish Style Baked Beans
1 lbdried great northern beans
1 lbthick cut bacon, chopped
1 largeonion, chopped
1/4 ctomato paste
1/2 cdark brown sugar
·vegetable broth, as needed
1 tspblack pepper
How to Make Homemade Amish Style Baked Beans
- Soak the beans overnight in a plastic container covered with cold water.
- The next day pre-heat oven to 250 degrees.
Place a large oven safe pot over medium heat and add in the chopped uncooked bacon and onion, cook about 10 minutes until onions are soft.
Stir in tomato paste, brown sugar and molasses.
Drain the beans, keeping the liquid stored in a measuring cup.
Add beans to pot.
Add enough vegetable broth to the bean liquid to total 4 cups and add to pot.
Raise heat to high and bring to a boil.
Add black pepper and salt.
Stir and cover pot with a lid.
- Place in oven for 6-8 hours until the beans are soft.
