fried green tomatoes

This is a wonderful Southern dish that I grew up enjoying. My mother used to always cook these in the summertime when she had an abundance of tomatoes and I have never gotten tired of them. They don't work with ripe tomatoes, only green. If you have never had them before, give them a try and put a little south in your mouth....

Ingredients

  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • - one inch of oil coming up side of skillet

How To Make fried green tomatoes

  • Step 1
    Note: You can pan fry these, but they are crispier fried in a lot of oil or deep fried.
  • Step 2
    Combine egg and milk and set aside. Combine cornmeal, flour, salt and pepper.
  • Step 3
    Dip the tomato slices in the milk and egg and dredge in the cornmeal mixture. Drop in hot oil, a few at a time and fry until brown. Keep warm in oven, until you have fried them all.
