I've lived in a Southern state for over 6 years now and I've finally made these beautiful fried tangy delicious bites! The tomatoes in my garden may not all make it to red anymore.

No need to travel to the Whistle Stop Cafe after you try this fried green tomato recipe. The buttermilk soak makes the breading really stick to the tomatoes and it doesn't fall off when frying. They end up with that iconic green tomato tart and buttermilk tang with a crunchy salt and pepper crust. These are just perfect!

Ingredients For fried green tomatoes

  • 4 md
    green tomatoes or 3 large
  • 1 1/4 c
    buttermilk
  • 2
    eggs
  • 2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    pepper
  • 1 1/4 c
    all-purpose flour plus 2 tbsp
  • 1/4 c
    cornmeal
  • oil for frying

If they are frying too slow, up the temperature to 375 F.
  • Slicing the green tomatoes.

    Slice tomatoes about 1/4 in thick.
  • Buttermilk, eggs, salt, pepper, and flour in a bowl.

    Mix buttermilk, eggs, 1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp of pepper, and the 2 Tbsp of flour together.
  • Flour, cornmeal, salt, and pepper in a bowl.

    Combine the flour, cornmeal, 1 tsp salt, and 1 tsp of pepper together in a bowl.
  • Soaking tomatoes in buttermilk mixture.

    Soak the tomato slices in the buttermilk mixture.
  • Dredge the tomatoes in flour mixture.

    Then coat them one at a time in the flour mixture.
  • Frying the tomatoes in oil.

    Oil should be 350 degrees. Cook in batches making sure you don't overcrowd them or overlap them. Turn around 3 times until nice and golden brown.
  • Draining the fried green tomatoes.

    Drain on paper towel. Serve immediately and enjoy!
