When I was a child my mom worked at a restaurant called Southern Trails. I would wait up for her to come home with some of their leftover Green Beans. We have these every holiday. I think they are even better the next day.

Ingredients

  • 8 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 large onion
  • 3 tablespoons dried parsley flakes
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 8 tablespoons flour
  • 4 cups water to cover
  • 6 cans green beans
  • 6 ounces ham or bacon
  • 3 - chicken bouillon cubes
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • - pepper to taste

How To Make southern trails green beans

  • Step 1
    Place a Dutch oven over medium high heat, add butter and melt.
  • Step 2
    When the butter is melted add the onions and parsley and with a large pinch of salt.
  • Step 3
    Cook, stirring occasionally until the onions are tender and translucent, 5 to 8 minutes.
  • Step 4
    Next whisk in the flour, being sure to coat the onions. Cook for about 30 seconds then whisk in the water.
  • Step 5
    Add green beans, ham, chicken bouillon cubes, garlic salt and pepper to taste.
  • Step 6
    Simmer uncovered for 3 – 4 hours till the green beans are tender and the gravy is thickened.
