When I was a child my mom worked at a restaurant called Southern Trails. I would wait up for her to come home with some of their leftover Green Beans. We have these every holiday. I think they are even better the next day.

Ingredients

  • 8 Tbsp
    butter, melted
  • 1 large
    onion
  • 3 Tbsp
    dried parsley flakes
  • 1 pinch
    salt
  • 8 Tbsp
    flour
  • 4 c
    water to cover
  • 6 can(s)
    green beans
  • 6 oz
    ham or bacon
  • 3
    chicken bouillon cubes
  • 1 tsp
    garlic salt
  • ·
    pepper to taste

How to Make Southern Trails Green Beans

Step-by-Step

  1. Place a Dutch oven over medium high heat, add butter and melt.
  2. When the butter is melted add the onions and parsley and with a large pinch of salt.
  3. Cook, stirring occasionally until the onions are tender and translucent, 5 to 8 minutes.
  4. Next whisk in the flour, being sure to coat the onions. Cook for about 30 seconds then whisk in the water.
  5. Add green beans, ham, chicken bouillon cubes, garlic salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Simmer uncovered for 3 – 4 hours till the green beans are tender and the gravy is thickened.
