I know that there are several recipes for these, but this is my absolute favorite. I think the balsamic vinegar gives it just the perfect touch.

I like to cook my onions a little longer than stated here, but this recipe works well for making a large batch to freeze. Then I can cook them down more after thawing to top a steak, burger, and of course my favorite - making french onion soup.

Ingredients

  • 4 c
    sweet onion, sliced
  • 2 Tbsp
    olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp
    brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp
    basamic vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp
    lemon juice
  • 1/4 tsp
    salt
  • 1/4 tsp
    pepper

How to Make Caramelized Onions

Step-by-Step

  1. Cook onion in hot olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat, stirring often, 10 to 12 minutes or until golden.
  2. Sprinkle with sugar, and cook 2 minutes.
  3. Add vinegar and next 3 ingredients, and cook 2 minutes.
  4. Serve warm or cold.
