1986 was the first time I made this dish. I was a newly-wed and I was very eager to impress my in-laws! My father-in-law sat there and critiqued the dish, breaking down every ingredient...I was sweating bullets!! And then he walked up to me and told me "these are the best baked beans I have ever eaten!!" Since then I have been crowned the "Baked Bean Queen!" I even have people request them as a Christmas present, and every family function, I don't even ask anymore...I just bake & take!! ENJOY!!
Notes from the Test Kitchen:
I've already landed my man, but still enjoy the stuffing out of these beans! The flavor is extremely robust thanks to the addition of the taco seasoning. A terrific side dish with ribs, hamburgers, or just about anything!
2 (28 oz)
Bush's original baked beans
finely chopped sweet onion
finely chopped green bell pepper
ketchup (try hot ketchup for a kick)
light brown sugar
Texas Pete Sauce (or any hot sauce such as Tabasco, etc...)
1Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Brown the ground chuck. Add Taco seasoning while browning beef. ***DO NOT add water*** Drain beef & set aside.
2Combine beans, onions, peppers, ketchup, mustard, brown sugar & Texas Pete in a 16" X 10" casserole dish.
3Add seasoned beef to the bean casserole.
4Place bacon on top of beans. Cover dish with aluminum foil, leaving a corner folded back for venting. Bake for approx. 1 hour. Remove foil and continue baking approx. 30 minutes or until bacon is brown and excess liquid has been cooked out.
