My mother, Dorothy King, made these beans for over 60 years for her church and other functions. The best beans ever.

How to Make Dorothy King's Baked Beans


  1. Soak 2 lbs. pea beans overnight in enough water to cover beans
  2. Drain water off
  3. Add water enough to cover
  4. Add 3/4 teaspoons baking soda
  5. Bring to a boil and boil about five minutes.
  6. Drain and rinse with clear water
  7. Cover with water, add salt and cook until tender, about 1 hours (add more water if top of beans become exposed.)
  8. add 1 lb. brown sugar and 2 tablespoons molasses.
  9. Put into baking dish and bake at 325 degrees for 2-3 hours.
  10. Bacon strips may be place on top before baking.
