This dish is my all-time favorite go to side dish for BBQ. It also is a very satisfying meal in itself for those nights when I don't feel like cooking. I've taken this to potlucks and company picnics and everyone wants the recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 pound ground chuck 80/20
  • 1/2 pound diced bacon
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, diced
  • 1-55 ounce can bush's baked beans
  • 1-14.5 ounce can black beans, drained
  • 2/3 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried mustard
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 2 tablespoons worchestershire sauce
  • 2-3 dashes hickory liquid smoke
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

How To Make cowboy beans

  • Assembled ingredients.
    Step 1
    Brown first 4 ingredients over medium heat and drain the fat.
  • Brown first 4 ingredients and drain well.
    Step 2
    In a large mixing bowl, combine remaining ingredients until well mixed.
  • Mix remaining ingredients in a large bowl.
    Step 3
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Add hamburger mix to bean mixture and stir well. Pour into 13x9 baking dish and top with strips of bacon (if desired) and bake for 1 hour until beans are bubbly and bacon is browned. Enjoy!!
  • Pour mixture into 13x9 casserole, top with bacon and bake for 1 hour.
    Step 4
    Variation: HAWAIIAN COWBOY BEANS Same as above, but add a 20 oz. can of pineapple tidbits, drained. Very Yummy!
