basic white rice
Make sure that you rinse your rice at least 3 times and pick out anything that floats or is dark in color. Be aware of small rocks in the uncooked rice.

Ingredients
- 1 cup uncooked long grain rice
- 2 cups water
- 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
How To Make basic white rice
-
Step 1Rinse the rice under cold water at least 3 times (or until the water runs clear). Drain in a colander and set aside.
-
Step 2In a medium sauce pan, bring the water to a boil, add the salt and stir. Add the rinsed and drained rice. Stir with a fork. *NOTE* another school of thought for doing this is to add your rice then add enough water to cover the rice. Stick your index finger on top of the rice and fill with water until it meets the first knuckle on the finger, then boil.
-
Step 3Once the water is brought to a rolling boil, reduce heat to low, cover, and let simmer until water completely evaporates, approximately 5 minutes. If the rice is still too firm, and there's still water in the pot, replace the lid, and let simmer another five minutes.
-
Step 4Remove from heat and fluff with a fork. At this point, you can add a tablespoon of butter or add to your favorite dish, like gumbo!
