The name comes from this dish being used as a gift to the grieving family at so many funerals, not because it will kill you. But don't save it for a funeral. Try it as a side along with roast ham.

Ingredients

  • 2 packages shredded frozen potatoes
  • 2 cups sour cream
  • 2 cans cream of celery soup
  • 1 large diced sweet onion
  • 3 cups sharp shredded cheese
  • 1 teaspoon butter
  • 1 cup crushed corn flakes or crackers or bread crumbs

How To Make utah funeral potatoes

  • Step 1
    Thaw potatoes. Mix potatoes, sour cream, soup, cheese, and onion. Spread mixture into a large buttered casserole dish. (can be halved for family size) [optional, for spicy version, add one can of green chilies]
  • Step 2
    Top with crumbs or crushed crackers.
  • Step 3
    bake, covered for 45 minutes at 350. removing foil and baking uncovered the last 15 minutes.
