  • TOPPING:

  • 1/3 c
    plain flour
  • 1/2 c
    brown sugar
  • 1 c
    pecans, chopped
  • 3/4 c
    butter
  • 1/3 c
    evaporated milk
  • CASSEROLE:

  • 3 c
    sweet potatoes, baked, peeled, and mashed
  • 1 stick
    butter
  • 1 Tbsp
    vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp
    ground cinnamon
  • 2
    eggs, beaten
  • 3/4 c
    sugar
  • 1/3 c
    evaporated milk

How to Make Sweet Potato Casserole

Step-by-Step

  1. Topping: Mix brown sugar, milk, flour, butter and pecans together. Spread evenly on top of sweet potato mixture without disturbing mixture.
  2. Casserole: Mash potatoes and combine with sugar, butter, eggs, vanilla, and milk. Place in a greased casserole dish. Spread topping on mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour uncovered.
  3. Variation: During the Christmas holidays, substitute eggnog for the milk in the casserole and topping.
  4. Notes: Blend the sugar and room temperature margarine together first; then add the eggs, milk and vanilla flavoring. I grate a little nutmeg over the casserole. Add the potatoes last. With the topping, I cream the butter with the brown sugar, then add the flour and milk. I add the pecans last.
