My uncle's wife, Shirley, won our hearts with this recipe since she married into our family in 1972. We always ask for this special dish at Christmas. I was lucky enought to "steal" the recipe a couple of years ago. We have always enjoyed this recipe.

  • 3 c
    sweet potatoes, peeled, cooked and mashed
  • 1 c
    granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp
  • 1/3 stick
    butter or margarine, melted
  • 1/2 c
  • 1 Tbsp
    butter flavoring
  • 1 Tbsp
    pure vanilla extract or sherry extract
  • 2 large
    eggs, beaten

  • 1 c
    brown sugar
  • 5 Tbsp
    self-rising flour, sifted
  • 1/3 stick
    butter or margarine, melted
  • 1 c
    chopped pecans

How to Make Shirley's Sweet Potato Casserole


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9 x 13 inch dish. Combine the ingredents for the casserole as listed. Spread in pan.
  2. Combine topping ingredients. Sprinkle over casserole. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden brown and bubbly.
