Not sure where I found this recipe but it is a favorite! I did change the recipe up to work for me. The ingredients listed are with my changes. Feel free to change it up to work for you. You can use fresh veggies or canned, ground beef or ground round. I used canned mixed vegetables with carrots, beans and corn. Very tasty!!

  • 4 ounces can of mushrooms, sliced
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  • 2 large cloves garlic, pressed or finely minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • - fresh ground pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 can mixed vegetables, drained, you can use fresh or frozen, your choice
  • 2 cups mashed potatoes
  • 1/8 cup chopped chives (or finely sliced green onions with tops)
  • 2 cups finely-shredded cheddar cheese or cheese blend, divided
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • - sweet hungarian paprika

How To Make shepherds pie

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Step 2
Place ground beef, mushrooms, onion, garlic, salt, and pepper in a large heavy skillet. Saute, breaking up ground beef, until the juices have almost evaporated.
  • Step 3
Stir in Worcestershire, then flour. Cook 1 minute, stirring often. Add beef broth, stirring to combine, then heavy cream. Simmer until gravy thickens. Pour into glass baking dish. Let cool slightly, then sprinkle green peas evenly on top of beef.
  • Step 4
In a mixing bowl, combine mashed potatoes, chives, 1 cup of the Cheddar cheese, and salt. Spread evenly on top of beef layer. Spread remaining cup of Cheddar cheese on top and sprinkle lightly with paprika.
  • Step 5
Bake about 30 minutes until cheese has melted and is slightly browned. Let rest 15 minutes before serving.
