My sister-in-law prepared this when we were visiting in Santa Barbara, CA. Aren't we all thankful for generous people who share recipes!? My late husband and I loved this dish. At first glance, it looks like it goes on and on, but it's three recipes on one page.

Blue Ribbon Recipe

A little bit of horseradish takes this Salisbury steak from ordinary to extraordinary. It's also used to spice up mashed potatoes. There's a faint flavor of horseradish, but it's not overwhelmingly spicy. We loved the addition of fresh mushrooms to the brown gravy. This recipe makes juicy and tender Salisbury steak and then rounds out the meal by jazzing up store-bought elements. Make this meal any night of the week when you need a dinner idea that comes together quickly.

How To Make salisbury steak with mushroom gravy and horseradish potatoes

Test Kitchen Tips
We did not have frozen mashed potatoes available. We used refrigerated, premade mashed potatoes (24 oz package) and added about 1/2 cup of milk to heat them.
  • Combine ingredients for the Salisbury steak.
    Step 1
In a medium bowl, combine steak ingredients, mixing lightly but thoroughly.
  • Shape into 4 ovals.
    Step 2
Shape into 4 oval 1/2" thick patties.
  • Pan fry.
    Step 3
Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat until hot. Place beef patties in the skillet. Cook 7 - 8 minutes or until no longer pink and juices run clear, turning once. Remove from skillet; keep warm.
  • Add mushrooms to the pan.
    Step 4
Add the mushrooms to the skillet and cook in the dripping to desired doneness.
  • Add gravy and water to the mushrooms.
    Step 5
Add gravy and water. Heat through.
  • Add patties to the gravy.
    Step 6
Add the patties to the gravy to keep warm.
  • Heat potatoes with milk, horseradish, salt, and pepper.
    Step 7
Heat the potatoes with a little milk. Stir in the horseradish, salt, and pepper immediately after cooking.
  • Serve Salisbury Steak With Mushroom Gravy and Horseradish Potatoes.
    Step 8
Serve in the Salisbury steak and mushroom gravy.
