My mother made the best mashed potatoes! The key to creamy mashed potatoes is WARM milk. You can thank me later.

prep time 10 Min

Ingredients

  • 6 - 8 russet potatoes, medium to large
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 stick butter
  • salt and pepper, to taste

How To Make mashed potatoes

  • Step 1
Peel and slice potatoes into large pieces. Cut one potato into four or five pieces.
  • Step 2
Boil potatoes in a large pot on the stovetop for 30 - 40 minutes until tender when stuck with a fork.
  • Step 3
Drain potatoes, and put butter on them.
  • Step 4
Use a potato masher to mash potatoes and butter.
  • Step 5
Warm one cup of milk in the microwave for 1 minute.
  • Step 6
Use a mixer to beat potatoes, adding milk 1/4 cup at a time. Use as little or as much (or more) milk as you need to get the creamy consistency that you want. Less milk creates stiffer potatoes. More milk creates thinner potatoes.
  • Step 7
    Salt and pepper to taste.
  • Step 8
For a more buttery flavor, add more butter to the top of the hot, mashed potatoes.
