the best baked beans ever

I have to give kudos to Ree Drummond of the Food Network. I started with her recipe the added and tweaked a bit to suit my family's taste. I have taken these to several dinners and always come home with an empty container. They are better the second day, so make ahead for the best results.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices bacon
  • 1 medium onion, chopped fine
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 3 28oz cans pork and beans
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup bbq sauce, your favorite brand
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons ground mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon hickory smoke salt or liquid smoke flavoring

How To Make the best baked beans ever

  • Step 1
    In a large skillet, cook bacon about halfway. Remove bacon from skillet and place on paper towels to drain.
  • Step 2
    Add onion and garlic to bacon grease in skillet. Sauté On medium heat till onion is soft, about 5 min.
  • Step 3
    Add beans and remaining ingredients to skillet. Cook about 5 min until flavors are blended.
  • Step 4
    Transfer to baking dish. A 9x13 works well. Lay bacon slices on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 and a half to 2 hours. Let sit about 5 minutes before serving.
