A nice "southwestern" touch to regular pinto beans. Feel free to spice them up with additional hot sauce or jalapenos. A great bbq side dish. *Prep time does not include soaking the beans overnight.

Ingredients
- 1 pound dried pinto beans
- 5 cups water (or more as needed)
- 1 onion, chopped
- 6 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1 bay leaf
- 3/4 cup ketsup
- 6 tablespoons dark brown sugar (packed)
- 5 tablespoons yellow mustard
- 2 tablespoons chili powder
- 2 tablespoons worchestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- hot pepper sauce to taste
- 1 1/2 teaspoons dried thyme
How To Make spicy-sweet bbq pinto beans

Step 1Place beans in a dutch oven with enough water to cover the beans by 3 inches and let soak overnight.

Step 2Drain beans and return them to the pot. Add 5 cups of water, chopped onion, garlic, and the bay leaf to the pot. Bring to a boil and cook until just tender, stirring occasionally - approx. 1 hour.

Step 3Stir in remaining ingredients and simmer until beans are very tender and flavors have blended well - approx. 30 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
