I have made this so long that I don't remember where I got the recipe. I only know that my family, friends, and neighbors love them and always ask me to bring them to picnics when invited. I know that you will love them also.

The recipe makes a lot of baked beans, which is good because they're delicious. Using white beans makes them slightly different than other baked bean recipes. The sweet sauce has a touch of smokiness from the bacon. As they thicken, the beans thicken. This side dish will be popular.

Ingredients

  • 110 ounces Great Northern Beans, drained
  • 1 pound brown sugar
  • 16 ounces dark Karo syrup or any dark corn syrup or molasses
  • 24 ounces ketchup
  • 1 pound bacon
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon mustard

Test Kitchen Tips
For testing, we cut the recipe in half. Here are the measurements we used: 4 cans of Great Northern beans, 1 3/4 c brown sugar, 1 c dark corn syrup, 1 1/2 c ketchup, 1/2 lb bacon, 1/2 a medium onion, and 1/2 tsp mustard.
  • Fry bacon until crisp.
    Step 1
    Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. Chop bacon. Fry bacon until crisp. Remove bacon and set aside.
  • In the same pan, cook chopped onions.
    Step 2
    In the same pan, cook chopped onions in the bacon grease until soft.
  • Combine drained beans, brown sugar, corn syrup, ketchup, and mustard.
    Step 3
    In a large mixing bowl, combine drained beans, brown sugar, corn syrup, ketchup, and mustard. Then add bacon and onions.
  • Pour into a baking dish.
    Step 4
    Pour into a baking dish.
  • Bake uncovered for 3 hours.
    Step 5
    Bake uncovered for 3 hours.
