Where I live, the boxed stuffing is here, at about $6/box as it is imported. So with a bit of research, here is the homemade version, and it is good! I have also made this with beef stock, vegetable stock, and mushroom stock, all equally as delicious.

prep time 10 Min
cook time 25 Min
method Stove Top
yield 6-8 serving(s)

Ingredients

  • 12 slices sandwich bread, cut into 3/4 inch cubes
  • 4 teaspoons dried sage
  • 4 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 tablespoons butter (1/2 stick)
  • 1 stalk celery, diced
  • 1 1/3 cups chicken stock or broth

How To Make homemade stove top stuffing

  • Step 1
Preheat your oven to 180 C (350 F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, add the bread cubes spread them out in a layer. If you have a small baking sheet, like me, just work in batches.
  • Step 2
Bake for about 10 minutes, and gently toss them part way through and bake for another 5 minutes. Goal is you are looking for even toasting on most of the cubes. Remove from the oven and let cool.
  • Step 3
Toss the bread cubes with the sage, thyme, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Step 4
Melt butter in a large non stick pan and add the celery and cook for a few minutes until soft. Then pour in the chicken stock and heat until simmering, add the bread cubes and stir, the bread will soak up the stock in just seconds (Boom! - Stove Top Stuffing!), add additional stock as needed to your liking. Remove from heat, cover, and let sit for 5 minutes.

    Step 5
    Serve and enjoy.
