As kids we didn't even have any idea that baked beans came out of cans. Our Gramma Nelson always made these and we loved them.

  • 1 lb
    great northern beans
  • 1/2 c
    brown sugar
  • 1/2 c
  • 1 Tbsp
    dry mustard
  • 1/2 lb
    ham or bacon
  • 3/4 tsp
  • 1
    onion (small) chopped

How to Make Grandma Nelson's Baked Beans


  1. Cover beans with water and soak overnight in a dutch oven. Drain beans. Add water to cover by 1". Bring to a boil, cover and simmer 20 to 30 min. until tender. Drain and save the liquid.
  2. Preheat oven to 350. Place beans in dutch oven or roaster with 5 c. bean liquid, sugar, mustard, pepper & molasses. Add meat and onions and bake for 3 to 4 hours. Stirring often...if they get dry add more bean liquid.
