I have been making these since 1948 when my mom taught me to do them.

  • 8 large
    tart apples - cored, sliced (granny smith)
  • 1/4 c
    bacon drippings or butter
  • 1-1/2 tsp
    fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 c
    dark brown sugar (packed)
  • 1/8 tsp
    kosher salt
  • 1-1/2 tsp
    ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp
    freshly ground nutmeg

How to Make Fried Apples


  1. In a large cast iron deep skillet, melt bacon drippings or butter
  2. Layer prepared apples evenly over skillet bottom.
  3. Sprinkle lemon juice over them, add brown sugar and salt.
  4. Cover and cook over low heat for 15 minutes until apples are tender.
  5. Sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg.
  6. Stir in spices and enjoy
  7. Note: Crumble crisp bacon over apples as a garnish when serving.
