granny smith apple, peeled and chopped (about 4 medium)
1 c
onion, chopped
1 c
brown sugar, firmly packed
1 c
3/4 c
cider vinegar
1/2 c
red pepper, chopped
1/2 c
dried currants
1 Tbsp
fresh ginger root, chopped
1 1/2 tsp
garlic, chopped
1 tsp
1/2 tsp
dried crushed red pepper
1/4 tsp
ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp
ground allspice
1 pinch

How to Make Apple Chutney


  • 1Combine all ingredients in heavy large saucepan. Bring to boil over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Reduce heat and simmer until liquid is slightly syrupy, stirring occasionally, about 1 hour.
  • 2Season chutney to taste with salt and pepper. Cool to room temperature.
  • 3(Can be prepared 1 week ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Bring to room temperature before serving).
