homemade applesauce
An easy homemade applesauce. You can control the amount of sugar. We personally love this with the red hot cinnamon candies, but you don't have to use them. Makes about 4 cups applesauce.

Ingredients
- 8 apples (about 3 lbs)
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice, freshly squeezed
- 1/2 teaspoon grated orange zest
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 1/4 cup cinnamon candies (optional)
How To Make homemade applesauce
-
Step 1Place apples in a large, heavy 6 qt saucepan. Add the water and cook over low heat, covered, until the apples are soft - about 15 inutes. Stir often to prevent from sticking. If there is water left, drain it before doing the puree step.
-
Step 2Put the apples through a food mill or food processor until they are as smooth as you want. You can leave them a little chunky, if desired.
-
Step 3Pour the pureed apples back into the saucepan and add all the ingredients except the red hots.
-
Step 4If you want the applesauce to have a pinkish color, add the red hots (optional). Bring to a boil over low heat, and simmer for at least 2 mintues. Serve warm with a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg.
