my sweet and smoky hot dog sauce

My husband loves chili dogs but the spicyness of the chili dog sauce does not love him. So in our house I need to find other ways to make flavor other than adding a lot of heat. I perfected this recipe over a few tries. The kitchen bouquet and the bacon give this is smoky flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1 large red onion diced
  • 6 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/2 stick butter
  • 1 teaspoon each cumin, chili powder, dry mustard, paprika, salt, and pepper
  • 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons kitchen bouquet or 1 tbsp. liquid smoke
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 pound bacon cooked a bit but not crispy the all ready cooked bacon works well for this recipe
  • 1-2 tablespoon tomato paste
  • - water just to cover

How To Make my sweet and smoky hot dog sauce

  • Step 1
    Place butter in large saucepan. Add the onions, and garlic and saute 1 minute. Add beef and pork and cook until browned.
  • Step 2
    Mix all the seasonings together and pour over meat.Add the worcestershire sauce and kitchen boutique and stir. Add the ketchup and sugar. Mix well.
  • Step 3
    Stir in bacon and add water just to cover. Bring to a boil. Reduce to simmer and simmer 30 minutes to thicken. Add 1 to 2 tbsp. of tomato paste in the last 10 minutes to make it thick.
  • Step 4
    Serve spooned over hot dog and top with shredded cheese
