I found this recipe a while ago. Originally, it used jalapenos or red chili peppers. I tried it again with chipotle peppers. That's the ticket. You can try many variations on this sauce: - Use honey or molasses in place of the brown sugar - Try different type of vinegar - Use more or less chipotles for a different heat level - Try replacing half the onion with diced sweet red peppers You can store the excess sauce for several weeks in the refrigerator or freeze for later use. Ingredients

  • 2 - onions, large white
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 6 - chipotle peppers with adobo sauce
  • 1 cup tomato ketchup
  • 1/2 cup brewed coffee. strong
  • 1/4 cup worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon dijon mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (or to taste - careful! heat can overwhelm)

How To Make sweet heat barbecue sauce

  • Step 1
    Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a saucepan over medium-high heat
  • Step 2
    Saute the onion and garlic until translucent, about 3-6 minutes
  • Step 3
    Place all remaining ingredients into a saucepan and simmer gently for 20-30 minutes
  • Step 4
    Place in a blender or using an immersion blender (boat motor) and blend the sauce until smooth
  • Step 5
    Continue simmering until it is the consistency you desire, about another 5-15.
