mom's best barbeque sauce

This sauce is really good on ribs or chicken. I don't like liquid smoke myself so I never add it to the sauce. It keeps really well in the fridge for a long time. Similar to Kansas City BBQ sauce - spicy and a bit sweet. You can adjust the heat to your taste by increasing or decreasing the amount of cayenne pepper.

Ingredients For mom's best barbeque sauce

  • 1/4 c
    cider vinegar
  • 1/2 c
    water
  • 2 Tbsp
    sugar
  • 1 Tbsp
    prepared mustard
  • 1/2 tsp
    ground black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp
    cayenne pepper
  • 2 Tbsp
    lemon juice
  • 1
    peeled and thinly sliced medium onion (i sometimes use 1 tbsp. dried, minced onion instead)
  • 1/4 c
    butter
  • 1/2 c
    tomato catsup
  • 2 Tbsp
    worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp
    liquid smoke flavoring (optional)

How To Make mom's best barbeque sauce

    Mix first 10 ingredients in a saucepan.

    Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes.

    Add remaining ingredients and heat to boiling.

    Can be cooled and kept in the refrigerator up to 2 weeks until ready to use.
