mom's best barbeque sauce

This sauce is really good on ribs or chicken. I don't like liquid smoke myself so I never add it to the sauce. It keeps really well in the fridge for a long time. Similar to Kansas City BBQ sauce - spicy and a bit sweet. You can adjust the heat to your taste by increasing or decreasing the amount of cayenne pepper.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon prepared mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 - peeled and thinly sliced medium onion (i sometimes use 1 tbsp. dried, minced onion instead)
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup tomato catsup
  • 2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke flavoring (optional)

How To Make mom's best barbeque sauce

  • Step 1
    Mix first 10 ingredients in a saucepan.
  • Step 2
    Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes.
  • Step 3
    Add remaining ingredients and heat to boiling.
  • Step 4
    Can be cooled and kept in the refrigerator up to 2 weeks until ready to use.
