As always, this originated as one of my mother's recipes. Homemade marinara sauce is so much easier than most people think! This recipe is simple, and it's great to whip up fresh for other recipes, or simply on top of pasta! NOTE: This sauce can be refrigerated up to 3 days or frozen up to 2 months. It's a good sauce to keep on hand frozen if you make a bulk batch!

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 medium onion, diced (about 3 tbsp)
  • 3 cloves garlic, chopped or pressed
  • 3 1/2 cups whole peeled canned tomatoes in puree (one 28oz can), roughly chopped
  • 1 sprig fresh thyme (or 2 tsp dried)
  • 1 sprig fresh basil (or 2 tsp dried)
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 dash black pepper (fresh ground preferred)

How To Make mmmarinara sauce

  • Step 1
Heat the olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat.
  • Step 2
Sauté the onion and garlic, stirring, until lightly browned. About 3 minutes.
  • Step 3
Add the tomatoes (and puree) and the herb sprigs and bring to a boil.
  • Step 4
Lower the heat and simmer, covered, for 10 minutes.
  • Step 5
Remove and discard the herb sprigs, unless dried seasoning was used. Stir in the salt and season with pepper to taste.
