I started off with some ripe tomatoes from my garden, expecting to make Stewed Tomatoes...instead, they wanted to be Barbecue Sauce. This recipe packs some heat, but it's still sweet.

Ingredients

  • 2 cans stewed tomatoes
  • 1 can chipotle peppers in adobo sauce
  • 12 - whole, dried cloves
  • 3-4 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice, ground or 4 whole
  • 2-3 cups brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1/2 cup blackstrap molasses or honey
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder

How To Make kate's home-made bbq sauce

  • Step 1
Take the stewed tomatoes, and cook them down (over medium heat) until they release most of their liquid in a large sauce pan (or dutch oven), remove solids and return liquids to pan.
  • Step 2
Add chipotle peppers in adobo sauce (if you prefer less heat in your sauce, use 1/4-1/2 can). Continue to simmer, adding spices.
  • Step 3
Slowly add sugar and honey/molasses stirring occasionally.
  • Step 4
Simmer sauce over low to medium heat for as long as necessary to thicken to a sauce, allowing extra liquids to cook off.
  • Step 5
    Store refrigerated until use.
