Usually, I serve this on a bed of spaghetti. Slight variations of this sauce make it perfect for lasagne.

Ingredients For homemade italian sauce

  • 12 oz
    can tomato paste
  • 16 oz
    diced, stewed, tomatoes
  • 1/2 c
    diced onion
  • 1/2 c
    diced bellpepper
  • 2 Tbsp
    oil
  • water
  • 1 lb
    lean hamburger, cooked and drained
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1/4 tsp
    red pepper (omit for lasagne)
  • 2 Tbsp
    butter (omit for lasagne)
  • 1 Tbsp
    sugar

How To Make homemade italian sauce

  • 1
    Allow hamburger to cook in large chunks.
  • 2
    Saute onion and pepper in oil. Add hamburger and remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil, then turn down heat and simmer 25-30 minutes, adding 1/4 cup more water if necessary. Sauce should be thick.

    Serve on pasta (or use in lasagna.)
