Huli, Huli sauce is sometimes referred to as Hawaiian BBQ sauce, and I suppose that is true, but I think it is so much more than that. It encapsulates a lot of what would be defined as Hawaiian, and is perfect for traditional pork dishes, as well as chicken and seafood. It can be used as a marinade or as a serving sauce. If you want to add a bit of Hawaiian flavor to your recipes, check this sauce out. So, you ready… Let’s get into the kitchen.

Ingredients

  • PLAN/PURCHASE
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil, extra virgin variety
  • 3 - 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup ketchup, homemade, if possible
  • 1/2 cup coconut or brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup pineapple juice
  • 1/3 cup tamari sauce or liquid aminos
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons chili sauce
  • 2 teaspoons ginger powder
  • 2 teaspoons rice vinegar

How To Make hawaiian essentials: huli, huli sauce

  • Step 1
    PREP/PREPARE
  • Step 2
    Gather your Ingredients (mise en place).
  • Step 3
    Add the oil to a saucepan over medium heat, then add the garlic, and stir until fragrant, about 60 – 90 seconds. Do not let the garlic brown or burn.
  • Step 4
    Add the remainder of the ingredients to the saucepan.
  • Step 5
    Whisk all the ingredients together and bring them up to a simmer.
  • Step 6
    Continue to simmer, stirring occasionally, until reduced by about 20% and begins to thicken, 8 – 10 minutes.

    Allow to cool, then place in a non-reactive container, and store in the fridge.

    The sauce will last 12 – 14 days before it starts losing its flavor.
